- Provide expert witness education and training programs for:
- persons seeking to become qualified as experts;
- experienced experts; and
- specialised tailored formats for specialist groups.
Training programs would include: - the court structure;
- the criminal/civil process including the role of judge and jury;
- the role of the expert in:
- pre-trial procedures;
- joint meetings of experts;
- court rooms in both civil and criminal trials;
- arbitration and mediation processes;
- Basic rules of expert evidence: presentation of expert evidence in an effective and confident manner, evidence in chief cross-examination, re-examination, the Voir-dire; and
- Training in report writing; in preparation of witness statements (when required). Understanding the form, content, requirement of and content of reports; how to avoid mistakes; tailoring the report to meet the particular specialisation and needs of the court; meeting court rules and procedural requirements.
- Newsletters - including case notes.
- Seminars.
- Annual Conference.
- Act as a voice for the expert witness community and representation of views of experts.
- Involvement with proposed reforms in the use of expert evidence.
- Advice on terms of engagement and fee arrangements.
- Liaise with other professional bodies and groups regarding matters of expert evidence and provisions of specialist training program formats.
